Espinho Branco, Serra Malagueta
Some trails in Cabo Verde are well-trodden, and then there is Espinho Branco. This five-hour moderate hike to the dramatic white rock formations on Santiago Island's most remote coastal headland is for people who want the version of Cape Verde that doesn't appear in the brochures: long ridge walks with no other hikers in sight, Atlantic views from cliffs that drop straight to the sea, hidden pocket beaches accessible only on foot, and the particular silence of a landscape that most visitors never reach.
Espinho Branco, meaning white rock, gets its name from the pale volcanic formations that emerge from the ridge near the coast, bleached and sculpted by centuries of Atlantic wind and salt spray into shapes that look like something between a natural fortress and an abstract sculpture. The approach to these formations follows a long, elevated ridge that offers views across both sides of Santiago Island's southern coastline, with the ocean visible on multiple horizons and the interior mountains of Cabo Verde rising to the north as you walk.
The trail is rated moderate rather than challenging, but the duration and the remoteness of the route mean it deserves respect. Your Tarradise guide knows the route in all conditions and will pace the hike to the group. There is no benefit to rushing here, and the biodiversity along the ridge rewards those who move slowly. Endemic coastal plants, seabirds on the cliff thermals, and lizard species found only in this corner of Cape Verde are all part of the experience if you are paying attention.
The hidden beaches accessible from the headland are, on calm days, among the most beautiful and isolated stretches of coastline on Santiago Island: sheltered coves of coarse volcanic sand with water cold and clear from the open Atlantic. Swimming is possible and a welcome end to five hours on foot. At €75 per person, this is the Tarradise tour most likely to produce the sentence 'I had no idea Cape Verde looked like this.'
