Overview

Most visitors to Cabo Verde arrive expecting desert, and Santiago Island delivers dunes and dry coastline in abundance. Serra Malagueta Natural Park delivers something else entirely: cloud forest. This three-hour moderate hike into Santiago's most important protected area is a genuine surprise. A high-altitude ecosystem of mosses, ferns, endemic trees, and mist that feels closer to the Azores than to the Sahara, yet sits just thirty minutes' drive from Tarrafal beach.

The park covers the central ridge of the Serra Malagueta range, rising to just over 1,000 metres, and the trails pass through a dense understorey of endemic Cape Verdean flora: species that exist nowhere else on earth, adapted to a very specific combination of altitude, moisture, and volcanic soil. Your Tarradise guide will identify plants as you walk and explain the conservation efforts that have helped the park recover from decades of agricultural pressure and deforestation. The park is home to the endemic Cape Verde Warbler, and birdwatchers regularly add it to their lists here.

The trail gains altitude steadily through open scrubland before entering the cloud forest proper, where the temperature drops and the vegetation thickens and the views behind you, over the rooftops of Chão Bom down to Tarrafal bay and the Atlantic, begin to open up through the trees. The ridge walk offers panoramic views in both directions across Santiago Island, and on a clear morning the scale of the island's volcanic geography is fully on display from up here in Cabo Verde's interior.

At €50 per person, the Serra Malagueta Natural Park hike is one of the best value experiences available in Cape Verde for anyone with an interest in natural history, birdwatching, or simply landscapes that don't look like anywhere else. Moderate fitness is required: the trail is well-defined but involves consistent climbing. Message us on WhatsApp to book and we'll confirm timing and meeting point.
