The ocean around Tarrafal, Cabo Verde

Tarrafal sits on a sheltered bay on the north coast of Santiago Island, the calmest stretch of coastline in Cape Verde for much of the year. The protected bay makes it an ideal base for boat trips, snorkeling, and swimming, even when the east coast is rough. The water temperature stays warm year-round, typically between 22°C and 28°C.

Further along the coast, the geology gets more dramatic. The sea cave at Águas Belas is carved into basalt cliffs by centuries of Atlantic swell, accessible only by boat. Its interior pools glow turquoise in the right light and it is one of the most photographed natural features in Cabo Verde.

All ocean tours are run with local fishermen and guides who know these waters well. The traditional fishing trip is a chance to learn hand-line techniques aboard a hand-built wooden boat, then eat whatever you catch on the beach afterwards.
