Serra Malagueta Natural Park
Hidden in the folds of Santiago Island's volcanic interior, the Ribeira Gongon valley is a place that hikers who have been coming to Cabo Verde for years still describe in hushed tones. The Gongon Trail is a three to four hour moderate hike that follows this fertile valley from its upper reaches down through terraced agriculture, past dramatic rock formations, and, in the wet season, to the sound and sight of waterfalls that vanish in the dry months, leaving only their carved channels in the rock as evidence of the water that once fell there.
The trail begins above the valley floor and descends gradually through smallholder plots where maize, sugarcane, and cassava grow in the deep volcanic soil. The terracing here is extraordinary: walls of dry stone stacked without mortar over centuries, following the contour lines of the hillside in a way that turns a near-vertical slope into productive farmland. Santiago Island's interior has been shaped by this kind of patient, accumulated labour for generations, and the Ribeira Gongon valley shows it at its most impressive scale.
The rock formations that frame the valley walls are among the most dramatic on the island: basalt columns and overhangs carved by millennia of water erosion, draped in succulents and mosses where moisture gathers in the shadow of the cliffs. Your guide will move at a pace that allows time to stop, look, and ask questions about both the geology and the farming communities whose lives are woven into this landscape in Cabo Verde.
At €65 per person and rated moderate in difficulty, the Gongon Trail suits anyone with reasonable fitness and an appetite for landscapes that reward attention. It is also one of the best seasonal tours offered by Tarradise Tours: the valley after rain is a completely different experience to the valley in the dry season, and both are worth doing.
