Ponta Preta, Tarrafal
The best coastal walks in Cabo Verde tend to end at the edge of something: a cliff, a headland, a point where the land runs out and the Atlantic begins. The Lighthouse Trail fits that description well. This three-hour moderate coastal hike takes you from Tarrafal along the headland to the old lighthouse that marks the northern tip of the bay, following a path of rocky coastal terrain, endemic scrubland, and near-vertical cliffs over water that shifts colour with the depth and the angle of the light.
The trail begins at the edge of Tarrafal town and immediately takes on the character of the Cabo Verdean coast at its most elemental: volcanic rock underfoot, the wind off the Atlantic in your face, the smell of salt and sun-warmed stone. The vegetation along this stretch of Santiago Island's coastline is low and adapted to the exposure: succulents, grasses, and flowering shrubs that bloom briefly after any rainfall and then fade back into the grey-green of the dry season. Birdwatchers will find the rocky headlands particularly productive, with seabirds using the updrafts along the cliff faces and shorebirds working the tideline below.
As the lighthouse comes into view, the trail rounds the headland and the full sweep of the Atlantic opens to the north. Nothing between you and the horizon, the ocean surface shifting through different shades of blue out to the edge of visibility. The lighthouse itself is a modest structure, functional rather than dramatic, but the setting turns it into something that photographers return to repeatedly across the day as the light changes.
The return route offers slightly different views back over Tarrafal bay and town, and on clear days you can see the Serra Malagueta peaks rising above the coast to the south. At €40 per person this is an outstanding value coastal walk in Cape Verde, requiring moderate fitness due to the uneven terrain.
