Overview

Santiago Island is cross-hatched by ribeiras: the river valleys that cut down from the volcanic interior toward the sea, carrying water in the rainy season and holding their shape as corridors of life, agriculture, and movement in the dry months that follow. The Ribeira Principal Trail follows one of the most historically significant of these valleys over 3.5 hours at a moderate pace, tracing an ancient route through farming communities, past crumbling water mills, and eventually down to a point from which Tarrafal bay comes into view below.

The hike begins in the upper valley where the ribeira is narrow and the surrounding hillsides are densely terraced, the stone walls holding back soil that has been worked for centuries in this corner of Cabo Verde. Old water mills appear along the valley floor, some still structurally intact, others reduced to the outline of their foundations. All of them mark the engineering ingenuity of communities that built their infrastructure entirely from the materials at hand. Your guide will give these structures the context they deserve, explaining how the traditional water management systems of Santiago Island worked and what their decline has meant for rural agriculture in Cape Verde.

As the trail descends, the valley widens and the vegetation changes, the intensively farmed upper slopes giving way to more open terrain. The communities along the route are small and quiet: people going about the actual work of smallholder farming in a way that feels removed from the coastal tourist economy. Interactions along the trail are natural rather than staged, and the pace of the walk allows for them.

The final descent toward Tarrafal opens up views over the bay that grow more expansive with each turn, a fitting reward for a route that has been about looking closely at things rather than rushing to a summit. At €60 per person, the Ribeira Principal Trail is a rewarding hike through the living agricultural history of the island. Message Tarradise Tours on WhatsApp to book and confirm the meeting point.
